Revitalization of the Perla 01 area in Ústí nad Orlicí

The town of Ústí nad Orlicí is similar in fate to many towns of its size. The Industrial Revolution developed the area’s potential with the entrepreneurial Harnych family creating a company there which gave work to the majority of the population and was the driving force behind the town’s prosperity. After the industry declined, the project site began to decay and became a problematic part of the town. Today, the now abandoned Perla 01 complex doesn’t necessarily represent a problem for the area, but above all an opportunity and a new challenge.

We perceive the potential of the industrial brownfield in the city centre as a great opportunity to change and improve the possibilities of the city’s functionality. Our design for the regeneration of the area in conjunction with the master plan includes an information centre with tourist facilities, new city gallery, youth centre, high school, a building for City Hall including a multifunctional hall, exhibition and lecture rooms and parking facilities. The new Perla 01 will provide revitalized premises for businesses as well as new sustainable housing. Over the next few years, the impermeable industrial brownfield will become a unique and functional part of the city with reference to its rich history.

Our proposal aims to integrate the regenerated Perla 01 site into the structure of the city's public thoroughfare and transport network, which will include new public areas for socialising such as squares, parks and streets comprising shops and services. The main intention is to break down the "barriers" that the abandoned area represents, open it and make it more accessible to the city's residents, while maintaining the exclusivity and industrial character of the former Perla 01.

Our design and regulatory plan for comprehensive revitalization was nominated for the title Urban Project of 2019.
